BEST OF SHOW

Helix27, by Jacquelyn Giuffre. Sculpture of leafy seadragons swirling like DNA Helix
Jacquelyn Giuffre

Helix27, by Jacquelyn Giuffre 27 x 14 inches, Bronze

From the artist, "Leafy sea dragons swirl like a DNA Helix."

This species of sea horse is possibly the most challenging to depict. They are elegant and intricate. The artist managed to keep track of every leafy tendril and make the bronze sculpture look light. The patina on the bronze is a perfect hue to bring up thoughts of the sea without depicting it. Each angle of the sculpture brings out different planes, angles, and curves of the piece. The longer it is looked at, the more detail is found.

OVERALL RUNNER UP

Gold Reflections, by Meg Merry. Draing of an Asian Arowana fish reflected up on the water's under-surface.
Meg Merry

Gold Reflections, by Meg Merry 11 x 14 inches, Marker and colored pencil

From the artist, "I came across this beautiful Asian Arowana at an aquarium in Arizona. I was fascinated with the reflections on the surface doubling its lovely orange scales, and I took several hundred photos over 3 visits before finding one I was satisfied with!"

Opacity, transparency, reflection, and hue are superbly handled in this drawing. There is a contradictory sense of solitude even though we know there are more fish in the water. Similarly, the black background speaks of depths of water while the reflection tells us that the fish is near the surface. It's a thoughtful, mental playfulness in this very serious drawing of an Asian Arowana.
