BEST IN SHOW

Sun King, by Jeremy Pappa, painting of a roaring lion with a painterly yellow, orange, and blue background. Full of vigor and energy.

Sun King, by Jeremy Pappa 24 x 24 inches, Oil and acrylic on canvas

Quintessential roar: angle, colors, passion, expression. On top of that, there is the contrast of contemporary splatter-plus-palette-knife background paired with realism and finished off with a touch of light surrealism in the form of whispy, smoke-like mane. We can see the sound of that roar.

BEST DOMESTIC CAT ART

Casey Williams, Feline Fusion. Art of of two entwined cats in black and white
Casey Williams

Feline Fusion, by Casey Williams 11 x 14 inches, Colored pencils

From the artist, "This detailed drawing captures two cats nestled closely together in a yin-yang position, highlighting the intricate textures of their fur and the sense of warmth and intimacy between them. You won't see their faces, but instead, the entwined bodies create a striking composition that draws attention to their contrasting coat textures."

The artist does an excellent job, above, of describing exactly why we love this piece. In addition, let's savor the sense of light flowing and tripping its way through this drawing and relish those gorgeous shadows.

BEST WILD CAT ART

Zoltan Boros, Stealth. Drawing of a cheetah from the rear, hunting an antelope in the distance.
Zoltan Boros

Stealth, by Zoltan Boros 30 x 20, Pencil drawing

From the artist, "The leopard stealth up on its prey."

We love how the artist directs our focus to match the leopard's. Instead of using atmospheric perspective to crete depth, Zoltan Boros reverses our usual experience of the world. Distance is made clear by the change in size from giant leopard amid large leaves to small antelope surrounded by less distinct bushes. By giving us the back view of the leopard, we get to embody the leopard as it stalks its prey, seeing what it sees, focusing on its focal point.

ARTIVISM AWARD

Clark Stoeckley, Cairo. Photo of an orange cat amid metal tins on the streets of Cairo.
Clark Stoeckley

Cairo, by Clark Stoeckley 20 x 20 inches, Digital photo, Sony a5000

From the artist, "This feral feline played hide and seek with me in a Cairo street market."

One of the many things Cairo is known for is its feral cat population. There is extensive debate on the subject of feral or "community" cats. This photograph of a feral cat somewhat startled in the middle of kitchenware, gives us a brief peek into life on the streets of Cairo.

We love the hints of orange reflection, rust, and analogous-enough red and yellow stickers around the cat. They help to connect it to the surrounding pots and pans while the cool bluish and silver hues of the metal create a fun angular frame.
